A patient's history is as important as their symptoms. It's what helps us decide if heart burn's a heart attack... if a head ache's a tumor. Sometimes patients will try to re-write their own histories. They'll claim they don't smoke, or forget to mention certain drugs... which in surgery can be the kiss of death. We can ignore it all we want, but our history eventually always comes back to haunt us. Some people believe that without history, our lives amount to nothing. At some point we all have to choose: do we fall back on what we know, or do we step forward to something new? It's hard not to be haunted by our past. Our history is what shapes us... what guides us. Our history resurfaces time after time after time. So we have to remember sometimes the most important history is the history we’re making today.
La storia di un paziente è tanto importante quanto i suoi sintomi. Ci fa capire se un dolore al petto è un attacco cardiaco, se è un malditesta o un tumore. Qualche volta i pazienti cercano di riscrivere la loro storia. Affermano che non fumano o si dimenticano di menzionare alcune medicine il che, in chirurgia, equivale al bacio della morte. Possiamo ignorarla quanto vogliamo, ma la nostra storia alla fine torna sempre a tormentarci.Alcune persone pensano che senza una storia le nostre vite non varrebbero nulla. Ad un certo punto dobbiamo scegliere: dobbiamo affidarci a ciò che conosciamo o dobbiamo andare avanti verso qualcosa di nuovo. E’ difficile non essere perseguitati dal proprio passato. La nostra storia e ciò che ci da forma… che ci giuda. La nostra storia torna sempre a galla… sempre, sempre, sempre. Quindi dobbiamo ricordarcelo, qualche volta la storia più importante è la storia che stiamo costruendo oggi.
