If given the option, we prep our surgeries for day. We study. We practice. We run through it over and over again in our minds. Taking on a patient's case is not unlike marriage. We get to know you. Inside and out. You trust us with your lives. And we promise to protect and care for you. In sickness and health. For better or worse.
In sickness and in health, they say. That sounds so final, so binding. But it just means you have to be there. You have to really want to be there. For whatever's coming. And we don't know. It could all pan out the way we want the way it's supposed to be. Or it could be so much worse.
Se ne abbiamo la possibilità, prepariamo gli interventi per giorn, studiamo, facciamo pratica, li ripercorriamo nella mente ancora e ancora. Prendere un paziente in carico non è diverso da un matrimonio. Impariamo a conoscerti, dentro e fuori. Ci affidate la vostra vita e noi promettiamo di proteggervi e curarvi, in salute e in malattia, nel bene o nel male.
In salute e in malattia, dicono. Sembra così definitivo, così vincolante. Ma vuol dire che devi solo esserci. Lo devi volere veramente. Per qualunque cosa arrivi. E non lo sappiamo. Potrebbe andare tutto come vogliamo, come dovrebbe andare. O andare molto peggio.
