1.02 - Il primo taglio è il peggiore

It's all about lines. The finish line at the end of residency, waiting in line for a chance at the operating table, and then there’s the most important line, the line separating you from the people you work with. It doesn’t help to get too familiar to make friends. You need boundaries, between you and the rest of the world. Other people are far too messy. It’s all about lines. Drawing lines in the sand and praying like hell no one crosses them.
Meredith: [voiceover] At some point you have to make a decision. Boundaries don't keep other people out; they fence you in. Life is messy, that's how we're made. So you can waste your life drawing lines or you can live your life crossing them. But there are some lines that are way too dangerous to cross. Here's what I know. If you're willing to throw caution to the wind and take a chance, the view from the other side is spectacular.


E' tutta una questione di linee, di confini. La linea del traguardo alla fine della specializzazione, quella invisibile tra te e il tavolo operatorio e poi la più importante di tutte, quella che ti separa dalle persone con cui lavori. Non è d'aiuto diventare troppo intimi, fare amicizia. Devi alzare delle barriere tra te e il resto del mondo. Gli altri sono troppo complicati e occorre mettere dei confini, tracciare linee sulla sabbia e pregare intensamente che nessuno le attraversi.
A un certo punto devi prendere una decisione. I confini non tengono fuori gli altri, servono solo a soffocarti. La vita è un problema e noi siamo fatti così, quindi puoi sprecare la tua vita a tracciare confini oppure puoi decidere di vivere superandoli. Ma ci sono dei confini che è decisamente troppo pericoloso varcare.
Però una cosa la so, se sei pronto a correre il rischio la vita dall'altra parte è spettacolare.
