2.23 - Combattere

The key to being a successful intern is what we give up: sleep, friends, a normal life. We sacrifice it all for that one amazing moment, that moment when you can legally call yourself a surgeon. There are days that make the sacrifices seem worthwhile. And then there are the days where everything feels like a sacrifice. And then there are the sacrifices that you can't even figure out why you're making.

A wise man once said you can have anything in life if you will sacrifice everything else for it... what he meant is nothing comes without a price. So before you go into battle, you better decide how much you're willing to lose. Too often, going after what feels good means letting go of what you know is right; and letting someone in means abandoning the walls you've spent a lifetime building. Of course, the toughest sacrifices are the ones we don't see coming, when we don't have time to come up with a strategy to pick a side or to measure the potential loss. When that happens, when the battle chooses us and not the other way around, that's when the sacrifice can turn out to be more than we can bear.


La chiave per avere successo come specializzando è rinunciare, al sonno agli amici, a una vita normale. Sacrifichiamo tutto per un momento speciale, il momento in cui ufficialmente puoi considerarti un chirurgo.
Ci sono giorni in cui pensi che valga la pena sacrificarsi, e ci sono giorni in cui ogni cosa sembra un sacrificio.
E poi ci sono sacrifici che non si capisce proprio perché si facciano.

Un vecchio saggio una volta disse "Puoi avere qualsiasi cosa nella vita se sacrifichi tutto per quella cosa"
Quello che il saggio intendeva dire è che ogni cosa ha un prezzo, qundi prima di affrontare una battaglia è meglio decidere quanto si è disposti a perdere.
Molto spesso fare quello che ti far star bene non significa fare ciò che è giusto.
E aprirsi a qualcuno significa abbattere i muri che hai costruito per tutta la vita.
Ovviamente i sacrifici più duri sono quelli che ci piombano adosso all'improvviso, quando non c'è tempo di escogitare una strategia, di fare una scelta, o di valutare le potenziali perdite.
Quando questo accade, quando è la battaglia a scegliere noi e non viceversa allora il sacrificio diventa più grande di quanto riusciamo a sopportare.
