2.21 - Superstizioni

My college campus has a magic statue. It's a longstanding tradition for students to rub its nose for good luck. My freshman roommate really believed in the statue's power and insisted on visiting it to rub its nose before every exam. Studying might have been a better idea, she flunked out her sophomore year. The fact is, we all have little superstitious things we do. If it's not believing in magic statues, it's avoiding sidewalk cracks or always putting our left shoe on first. Knock on wood. Step on a crack, break your mothers back. The last thing we want to do is offend the gods.

Superstition lies in the space between what we can control and what we can't. Find a penny, pick it up, and all day long you'll have good luck. No one wants to pass up a chance for good luck. But does saying it thirty three times really help? Is anyone really listening? And if no ones listening, why do we bother doing those strange things. We rely on superstitions because we're smart enough to know we don't have all the answers. And that life works in mysterious ways. Don't diss the juju, from wherever it comes.

Nel mio college c'era una statua magica. Tra gli studenti c'era l'antica usanza di strofinarle il naso per avere fortuna. La mia coinquilina del primo anno credeva molto nel potere di questa statua e insisteva nell'andare a grattare il naso prima di ogni esame.
Forse avrebbe fatto meglio a studiare visto che è stata buttata fuori al secondo anno.
Ma il fatto è che ognuno di noi compie dei piccoli gesti scaramantici e quando non si crede nelle statue magiche magari si evitano le fessure sui marciapiedi o ci si infila sempre per prima la scarpa sinistra o si tocca ferro.
"Se una fessura pesterai allora si saranno guai."
L'ultima cosa che vorremmo fare è offendere gli dei.

La superstizione occupa quello spazio che c'è tra ciò che possiamo controllare e ciò che non possiamo controllare.
"Se un soldino troverai tutto il dì fortuna avrai."
Nessuno vuole farsi sfuggire un occasione fortunata, ma dirsi questa cosa 33 volte aiuta davvero? Qualcuno ascolta veramente? E se nessuno ascolta perché ci preoccupiamo di fare le strane cose che facciamo?
Ci affidiamo alle superstizioni perché siamo abbastanza intelligenti da sapere che non abbiamo tutte le risposte.E che la vita segue dei percorsi misteriosi.
