'Grey's Anatomy' star Katherine Heigl talks beauty, fame and life on camera
'Izzie' talks about her rise to the top and her role

LOS ANGELES -- Katherine Heigl has been on camera since she was 9 years old. But the flashbulbs have never been brighter than they are now for one of the stars on the hit ABC medical drama "Grey's Anatomy."

The 27-year-old blond beauty, who plays Dr. Isobel "Izzie" Stevens, said she's still adjusting to the challenges of overnight fame. But she's digging the perks: One acting gig helped Heigl find her fiancé, singer-songwriter Josh Kelley. She was hired to star in his music video, and the two ended up engaged.

Kelley was by Heigl's side when she was honored recently by Cosmopolitan magazine. Editor Kate White hosted an intimate dinner for Heigl to celebrate her appearance on the cover of December's issue. The actress' manager/mom and TV co-stars T.R. Knight and Kate Walsh were also there to toast Heigl's success.

Later, she took time out to talk about the pressures and pleasures of celebrity.

AP: What's it like to become instantly famous?

Heigl: It's weird. I've been doing this for so long and I always imagined what it might be like to have this success, but you can't really know what it will be like. The most pivotal point was at the "upfronts" (where broadcasters present programs to advertisers) in New York last year. People would come up to me and tell me how much they loved the show, and New Yorkers just don't do that! The excitement for the show was just unbelievable. I've been waiting 15 years for this kind of success and I'm just so grateful and really thrilled. It's definitely overwhelming at times.

Is there a downside?

With all the magazines, there's so much access into people's personal lives. You feel watched all the time and it feels like you can't be yourself, like you can't go to the grocery store unless you're wearing a cute outfit and look perfect. But I feel like I'm learning how to live with it and be myself regardless of judgment or criticism. All I really care about are the people I love. It is overwhelming. I think it takes experience.

What's it like to see yourself on the cover of Cosmopolitan?

This is huge for me. I've always read Cosmo and loved the covers, the fashion spreads and the sex advice. It feels sort of like an out-of-body experience, like it's happening to someone else.

What do you think "Grey's Anatomy" says to women?

I'm really grateful because the character I play is smart and ambitious. And not ambitious in a bad way, getting ahead at the expense of someone else. She's ambitious in her own self, pushing herself to be her best. The women on this show are independent, strong and career-driven. They're so supportive of one another, and that's an important message to put out into the world today. Every woman is an individual, interesting and inspired in her own right. I think they really push that theory in this show and I love that. I'm proud of that.

Your character, who modeled lingerie to finance her medical training, struggles with the notion of beauty. How do you feel about it?

It's an interesting line to toe. I understand the desire and the need to look and be perfect in this industry. But I'm a real woman, a real size ... well I don't even know what size I am. Between 4 and 6, depending on the day. I am not perfect. I have my moments where I feel sexy and healthy, and then I have days when I just want to put on my sweats and not talk to anyone. Beauty is such a superficial thing. People only see your exterior and there's so much room for misjudging people based on how they look. All these beautiful, perfect people do not have beautiful, perfect lives. All these beautiful celebrities have the same pain and turmoil in their lives as I do. I think it's more important to be my personal best and put that out there.

What's a typical day like?

Usually on Mondays our call time is 6 a.m. I live five minutes from work, so I'll wake up at 10 (minutes) to 6. Then I'll spend five, 12 to 14 hours on the set. The call times get progressively later during the week. Last night I worked until 2:30 a.m.

How do you unwind when you're not working?

My life is either overwhelming or totally underwhelming. I'll have really busy weeks with work, photo shoots and interviews, and then I'll have a week where I'm not working that much. I have these big couches at home, so I can have my four dogs on my lap while I read a book. I knit a lot. When Josh is around, I want to spend time with him because we don't get to spend a lot of time together. We'll have a lazy, easygoing breakfast out, go to the movies, or go to a bar and have a drink. I don't go to a lot of clubs or concerts. Of course I go to his concerts! But otherwise it's calm stuff. I just like it to be relaxed.

Ma le cose le vanno benissimo: una performance ha aiutato la Heigl a tovare il suo fidanzato, lo scrittore di canzoni e cantante Josh Kelley. Kelley era al fianco della Heigl quando fu onorota recentemente dalla rivista Cosmopolitan. Heigl: E' strano. Faccio questo lavoro da moltissimo tempo e ho sempre provato a immaginare come sarebbe stato avere questo successo, ma nn puoi sapere come in realtà sarà. L'evento più importante erano gli "upfronts" (dove vengono presentate le pubblicità dei programmi) a New York lo scorso anno. Le persone sarebbero venute da me e mi avrebbero detto quanto amano lo show, e i Newyorchesi hanno proprio fatto così! L'emozione per lo show era semplicemente incredibile. C'è una parte negativa?

Con tutti i giornali, c'è tanto accesso alle vite private delle persone. Ti senti sempre osservato e senti come di nn poter essere te stesso, come che non potessi andare al supermarket senza avere un vestito che ti sta bene e sembrare perfetto. Ma sento che sto imparando a conviverci senza badare a giudizi o critiche. Tutto quello che mi interessa sono le persone che amo. E' indescrivibile. Penso che ci voglia esperienza.

Com'è vedere te stessa sulla copertina di Cosmopolitan?

E' fantastico. Ho sempre letto Cosmo e amato le copertine, i discorsi sulla moda e i consigli sul sesso. Sembra un' esperieza extra-corporea, come se stasse succedendo a qualcun'altro.

Cosa pensi che GA dica alle donne?

La mia vita è sia bellissima che totalmente noiosa. Avrò giorni impegnatissimi con il lavoro, servizi fotografici e interviste, e poi avrò una settimana dove nn lavorerò così tanto. Ho questi grandi divani a casa, così posso avere i miei quattro cani vicino a me quando leggo un libro. Ricamo molto. Quando c'è Josh, voglio trascorrere del tempo con lui perchè non trascorriamo molto tempo insieme. Faremo una pigra, divertente colazione fuori, andiamo a vedere un film o al bar a bere qualcosa. Non vado in molti club o concerti. Ovviamente, vado ai suoi concerti! Ma d'altronde è abbastanza tranquillo. Mi piace essere rilassata.

Il tuo personaggio, che ha fatto la modella x lingerie x permettersi gli studi di medicina, lotta con la nozione di bellezza. Come ti senti riguardo a questo?

E' una cosa interessante. Io capisoco il desiderio e la necessità di apparire ed essere perfetti in questa industria. Ma io sono una donna vera, una taglia vera... beh veramente nn so neanche che taglia porto. Tra 4 e 6, dipende dal giorno. Non sono perfetta. Ho dei momenti in cui mi sento sexy e in salute, e altri giorni in cui voglio mettermi i miei maglioni e nn parlare con nessuno. La bellezza è una cosa così superficiale. Le persone vedono solo il tuo aspetto e ci sono un sacco di ragioni per "screditare" le persone che si basano solo su come appaiono. Tutte queste persone bellissime e perfette nn hanno vite bellissime e perfette. Io penso che sia più importante che dia il mio meglio e lasci fuori le apparenze.

Com'è una tua giornata di lavoro tipo?

Di solito il lunedì si inizia alle 6 di mattina. Vivo a 5 minuti dal lavoto, così mi alzo 10 minuti prima delle 6. Poi trascorro 5, 12 fino a 14 ore sul set. Durante la settimana poi si inizia più tardi. La notte scorsa ho lavorato fino alle 2.30 di notte.

Come ti rilassi quando non lavori?

Sono veramente grata perchè il mio personaggio è intelligente e amibizioso. E nn ambiziosa in un modo negativo, facendo carriera a spese altrui. Lei è amibiziosa a modo suo, facendo lei stessa il suo meglio. Le donne di questo tf sono indipendenti, forti e mirano alla carriera. Si supportano molto a vicenda, e questo è un messaggio importante da trasmettere al modo al giorno d'oggi. Ogni donna è un individuo, interessante e ispirata nel suo modo. Penso che loro veramente trasmettano questa teoria nel tf e io lo amo. Ne sono orgogliosa.

Io la adoro. E' bellissima stupenda nella sua semplicità.
Non è mai troppo truccata, è proprio semplice.

E poi anche fisicamente: finalmente una che non è anoressica, ma è giusta, normale, equilibrata.
