Unless you're paid to be there, no one ever wants to go into an O.R. It's freezing, you're naked, and a stranger will be cutting into your body with knives. But what patients don't know and what we try to keep them from knowing is sometimes it's just as terrifying for us. Traumas, heart surgery, anything to do with the pancreas. Any surgeon who says they're not afraid of those is lying. But no matter how risky the surgery no matter how scared you might be your job is to reassure your patient.and tell them, "Everything is going to be okay." Whether you believe it or not.
Sometimes, surgeries go better than planned. There's no better gift you can give someone than saying you saved the person they love. I look forward to those moments. Unfortunately, those perfect outcomes are rare. You would think it gets easier, but it doesn't. Each one hurts just as much as the last one. So, we hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Because the worst has a nasty way of finding you.

Ma quello che i pazienti non sanno e quello che cerchiamo di tener loro nascosto è a volte, fa paura anche a noi. Traumi, operazioni al cuore, qualsiasi cosa che riguardi il pancreas. Un chirurgo che dice di non averne paura, mente. Ma non importa quanto rischiosa sia l'operazione, non importa quanto tu abbia paura, il nostro lavoro è tranquilizzare il paziente, e dirgli che andrà tutto bene, che ci crediamo o no.
A volte gli interventi riescono meglio del previsto. Il regalo più bello è dire a qualcuno che hai salvato una persona a loro cara. Attendo con ansia quei momenti. Purtroppo, però, questi scenari perfetti sono rari. Pensiamo che sarà più facile, ma non è vero. Ogni volta stiamo male come l'ultima. Perciò speriamo per il meglio ma ci prepariamo per il peggio. Perchè il peggio riesce sempre e comunque ad arrivare a te.
